Fizik has earned itself a reputation for well-crafted saddles, and the Italian manufacturer saves the very best for its 00 line. If you're looking to invest in an all-around racing and training saddle, the Antares 00 Carbon Braided Saddle makes a stunning case for itself with carbon construction, low weight, and an anatomic design that will provide you with the platform you need to make serious gains as you train.
The design of the Antares 00 focuses heavily on two areas: low weight and stiffness. As such, Fizik didn't hold back on its use of carbon, including braided Carbon Mobius rails, which save a claimed 30g — or about 20% of the saddle's overall weight — compared to non-carbon rails. Their oval shape adds durability as they routinely face road vibrations, and the textured surface makes for dependable, secure clamping without resorting to Newton meters that put you in danger of crushing the rails.
Carbon rails are a significant feature, but the Antares 00's carbon shell sets it apart from many other high-end saddles. Fizik composes the shell with a thin layer of foam sandwiched between two layers of carbon fiber, which provides rigid support and vibration-dampening effects while still retaining an ability to flex when it needs to courtesy of the foam. This engineered flex separates the Antares 00 from purely masochistic race saddles, proving its versatility as a piece of equipment worthy of training and racing demands.
While it certainly displays ample stiffness, the Antares 00 isn't a one-dimensional brick. At the nose, 10mm of featherweight, high-density foam padding provides targeted cushioning for riders who spend a lot of time in the drops or riding aerobars. The nose's moderate, 45mm width also provides extra support when you're riding in the front of the saddle. Despite these nods to training comfort, Fizik keeps the weight down to race levels, with the entire saddle only adding a claimed 140g to your setup.
