I have a more traditional clam shell style roller bag I use a lot too. However, packing in the two sides of those can be a little limiting depending on what kind of gear you're working with. Having one big open duffel like this is super nice to give you some more flexibility in your packing when needed. Say you're going on a ski trip for example and want to pack a big bulky helmet. That wouldn't really fit nicely in either side of the clam shell style carry on, but will plop down in this thing no problem. Quality is really great as well, definitely feels nicer to me than the department store style luggage. And as an "outdoor" person I love to support the outdoor brands I like with my luggage purchases. Can't comment on longevity with this, but my oldest duffel bag from TNF is 8 years and going strong so I am not super concerned.

This bag is surprisingly spacious for its size. The outer compartment is extremely convenient for items you need to get quickly. It rolls easily and is more durable than any other carry on bag I've purchased.

This bag surpassed my expectations as I was able to actually test it during two weeks in Japan (which was during the heat wave and typhoon Jongdari in July). Transportation modes included: buses, cars, trains, planes, and walking. No issues with plane overhead bins; I often had it sideways to accommodate others’ “carry-on size” luggage. This is my first rolling thunder, so I have no comparison to the last model. If you have mastered the art of packing, the size is PERFECT. Worked fantastic on the train, bus, plane, and walking to/from the train station. Its size allowed for easy maneuverability. Walked/rolled through the typhoon after an hour-long train ride. Excellent water-resistant material and zippers; contents inside were COMPLETELY dry and water didn’t seep through the zippers (my companion was not so lucky with her regular cloth rolling luggage). I was super psyched walking through 20 mph winds, sideways rain, and putting the luggage through what it was built for. Had no issues whatsoever with the wheels. The only feature that I was meh about, was the Sherpa strap. Strapped my Tom Bihn Brain Bag on and it dragged on the floor. Most of the time I sat my bag on top of the luggage against the telescope handle and wrapped the Sherpa strap around the top handle. The backpacks position made it heavier to roll since the weight was now distributed higher, but it worked.

The Rolling Thunder carry on bag is perfect for those short trips where you need to pack more than you can get into a pack. It’s slightly smaller than the Black Hole 40L, but I have found that it fits onto more planes as it will fit under the seat in front of you. I can fit a couple days worth of clothes into it. Overall this is a great bag.

I purchased this bag for a trip to the Caribbean side of Panama. Roads there are uneven if paved at all, and most journeys include a boat ride. When I arrived it was raining, and when I unpacked at my destination, the contents of my bag were wet. While I didn’t expect the Rolling Thunder to be a dry bag, I did expect better performance than this.

We got the same bag 1 1/2 years ago and that style were much better. These new ones aren’t made as well. The handle is cheap(plastic instead of metal) and has a hard time going up and down. It doesn’t seem to roll as smoothly as the old style. The bag itself seems a little smaller on the inside because of the hard backing. Unless the styles goes back to the old one, we won’t be buying anymore. Which is a bummer because the old style has held up amazingly and it super smooth rolling and perfect for travel.

This rolling duffel is very well made and fits almost everything you could possibly want in a carry on. It has two outside pockets on the front, which makes it nice to have necessary things easily accessible when needed. Love this bag.
