A 4 a.m. start doesn't bother you one bit. However, trying to skin up the mountain in a bulky, restrictive jacket drives you crazy, which is why the Black Diamond Women's Dawn Patrol Hooded Jacket is the go-to in your outerwear quiver. More specifically, the Dawn Patrol is a jacket built for powder-obsessed, backcountry addicts like yourself.

Touting a lightweight construction that makes accessing those drool-worthy chutes feel akin to a walk in the park (or something like that), the Dawn Patrol features a four-way stretch fabric that enables you to keep moving up the skin-track and shimmying down your fall-line. Additionally, the Dawn Patrol features a slim fit for smooth integration with your backpack or climbing harness, while the DWR treatment fends off light precipitation and moisture alike. Two internal drop pockets accommodate an extra set of gloves, and the two harness-compatible hand pockets allow you to access your necessities on the fly.

I'm stoked BD got a women's line, but they really need to work on their women's sizing. I feel like it's all over the place...sometimes I fit in a small, sometimes medium, once in a while even a large. It's pretty inconsistent. This jacket's a fair soft shell; it breathes, but you still can get hot and clammy because there's not enough venting options. I wish it had pit zips! All BD jackets don't seem to have enough pockets either...I'd love at least one internal pocket, 2 would be great! It does have the 2 internal drop pockets...but they don't zip/close and I'm always feeling like I'm going to lose whatever I put in there. Extra goggle lenses, chapstick...not enough spots to store what I need. It does what it says...repels light moisture and breathes, but no more...could use some improvements for sure. Just noticed this is listed as a "slim fit"...I would definitely not call it slim fit, athletic maybe? It's loose enough to move and not feel constricting.
