I got these for a bit of added peace of mind when I leave my kayak on my roof while i eat or go to get supplies. It obviously won't stop anyone with a pocket knife, but will slow people down enough to make them think twice before lifting your boat.

The strap itself is sturdy and easy to crank down nice and tight but the locking mechanism doesn't actually lock the strap down...it locks a flimsy plastic cover over top of the strap release. steel core straps actually lock the release mechanism. these thule straps are good for leaving your board on rack if you'll be back in a bit but I'd be skeptical leaving it for a while in an area where someone had the time to just pry the plastic cover off and press the release.
