A horse that runs well in the slop is called a "mudder", and a runner who runs well in the mud is called "very dirty". If you're out there on the trails no matter what and don't shy away from unfavorable conditions, then the Salomon Speedcross 5 Trail Running Shoe may just be the shoe you've been dreaming of. Back in its newest iteration, the Speedcross is more equipped than ever for looser trail conditions like mud and snow. It's been updated with a softer and tackier rubber outsole compound, and features deeper, more widely spaced lugs to ensure a secure foothold even when you're charging through softer dirt, slippery mud, and summit snows. The updated heel unit, which is taller than its predecessors, helps create more stability for descents in soft trail conditions, while the forefoot maintains flex when you're digging into the trail on steep ascents.

This is my second pair of Salomon Speedcross shoes. First pair were the 4s and now I have the 5s. Both pair have been absolutely wonderful. They are the most comfortable shoes I have ever worn. Wearing the 4s vs the 5s appear to be no different. It looks as though the changes are aesthetic only. When my 5s wear out, I will buy a pair of 6s. As for my order from Backcountry goes... the order process was simple and fluid. The cost was on par with other vendors. However, the arrival date seemed to be a couple of days quicker than anticipated... and this was during the high point of the COVID pandemic. I would and I plan on purchasing from Backcountry again and I'll definitely be buying another pair of Salomon Speedcross shoes again.

My fiance got these in fjord blue. He already had a pair of Speedcross shoes from a few years ago and absolutely loved them. He said they are true to fit, extremely comfortable and easy to adjust. The bottoms of these shoes have impressive grip for anything for steep ascents on trails (or not trails!) and for regular trail runs. He's used these in the Cirque Series races and is very happy. The only con (not really a con) is that these really shouldn't be worn much on pavement. The grips/spikes on the bottoms will wear down faster if you are on pavement with these.
