Great for freestone streams with just enough current to drop this nymph 3-4 inches under the water. I also use this fly in lakes where I have the time to let the fly sink to the bottom. The metal wrap around the shank make this an even better fly on sunny days. Still prefer the hare's ear nymphs but this fly has a way of picking up trout from the edges attracted by the flash.

These Copper Johns are tied really well and I can absolutely say they work!. Great imitator of a mayfly nymph and can really be used in most situations. The epoxy back really adds that extra shine to attract even the most stubborn of fish. I went with a size 18 in the “nymph” color and it works great!

If I'm struggling with fly choice, I usually tie on a copper john, followed by a zebra midge or RS2. The combination can generally be fished in most western streams and produce results given the variety of insects this fly resembles.
