These shorts do run large so size down. These shorts also have a very funky was band, but I found an epic use for the waste band. It sits very well under a harness or backpack with a waste band. Go to shorts when using a harness or backpacking. Bought a second pair in medium.

If you're normal human shaped, go down a size. Medium was hanging off of me and had to be cinched in severely to fit. Returning for a Small instead.

Everything about these is great- EXCEPT the waistband. I still wear them, and they are a good summer option for staying cool . But the drawstring runs along the bottom of the elastic waist. Which means that if you tighten it up so it creates more tension than the stretchy waist band itself, the TOP of the waist band flares outwards and is loose. So it looks like you're wearing shorts a size or two too big. Sure seems like the designer never tried a pair on....

I bought these as a gift, here's what he had to say- "I like these, but only because the drawstring holds them up and I don't care that the waistband isn't totally tight; despite it looking a little ridiculous it doesn't really matter and is pretty unobvious unless I'm not wearing a shirt. They're a bit long but the material is really nice. The pockets are at the side of the short which kind of keeps things out of the way but also just ends up funneling them to a more specific part of your leg. They're not perfect for me, but I do think I'll wear them for awhile."
