Grivel's Up & Down Ascender adds convenience to your big wall climbing arsenal by doubling as a descender. An integrated belay plate lets you bite a single strand through the whole and clip it to your harness like a belay device for rappelling. The Up & Down's primary use (ascending) has the trusty performance you'd expect out of any product by Grivel.

Great product, bought it for fixed lines in Himalayas, have yet to bring it out to the mountain but the couple test runs I have used it on has been an absolute dream. Large thumb action to engage the teeth are great with gloves and the added feature of being able to use a carabiner to pry the teeth when its in a bind is great! Great product and would highly recommend.

There are some nice ascenders on the market. I went with the Grivel because i need something I can trust up in the mountains with my brothers. Bombproof.

If you're looking for an ascender to travel fixed lines this is the ticket. From my initial uses it works very easily when clipping into a rope, a simple flick of the thumb and you can be on or off. Definitely not something you want to be fiddling with with two hands at high elevation. The descend feature is really pretty slick and works well but in order to use make sure you back this up properly so you can un-load the ascender from the rope because those teeth really bite! Easy decision to select this piece for my kit with the innovative new features and simple one-handed operation.

If, like me, you were confused by BackCountry's description of the applicable Rope Diameters (Described be B.C. as "8 - 13mm")... The Grivel A&D will ascend ropes of size 8.3mm up to 13mm. The Grivel A&D will DESCEND ropes from 7.3mm to 13mm. See the attached product photo.
