Tech-packed shorts don't have to be serious in appearance, and Wild Rye drives the point home with the Freel Shorts. These sturdy shorts are ready for a berm-blasting good time, thanks to their four-way stretch nylon fabric that holds up to mud, showers, scuffles with low branches, and even sun fade. To keep you from getting bogged down on the trail, the nylon fibers are stitched to actively wick away perspiration and dry so that scorching days don't results in soggy shorts. The Freel Shorts feature a lengthy 12-inch inseam that gives the coverage you want for your thighs, and just enough room to toss on knee pads if you're getting a little wild. They come without a liner so you can toss your favorite short on underneath before taking to the singletrack.

I really love these shorts. The fit is perfect -- not too baggy (like some shorts I own) but not constricting either. I love the four-way stretch. I found that they run true to size. My usual size 4 fit perfectly, though if you want them to fit a little looser it might be good to size up. And I'm all about the patterns -- who doesn't want sloths on their bike shorts?! I'd recommend these to anyone and I plan to give them as gifts to all my MTB lady friends.

THESE ARE THE SHORTS WOMEN HAVE BEEN WAITING FOR!!! They are SO CUTE, so easy to clean, so comfortable, and 100% for mountain biking. I'm obsessed. (Yes, I should've been wearing a helmet in my photo - I forgot it. I'm sorry everyone) XD

I ordered the geo dot pattern thinking they were black. They are not black, so I returned... But I do love the fit of these and have them in other colors :)

I saw these shorts and decided to take a chance on them. I read the other reviewers' reviews to get an idea on sizing. I was between sizes on the Wild Rye Size Chart. I am 5' 100lbs. I ordered both the 2 and the 4. When I tried them on, the Size 2 fit me much better than the 4 which was too big everywhere. I have and use both compression and baggy shorts when I mountain bike. I usually do not look great in the baggy look. I am petite and tend to look overwhelmed or lost in them. When I tried these on, I was quite pleasantly surprised. They actually looked good on me. I think it is because they have a different profile or outline to them from most of the baggy mountain bike shorts out there which I think are designed for men . They are not that wide in the thighs and quads, but then flare out a little around the knee. The nearest thing I can liken them to is a capri/knicker bell-bottom or flare pant. Additionally, the length of these shorts in the size 2 was just right for me even though I am short. It hit at the knee. Most of these baggy shorts are usually way too long on me. The material is four way stretch, an improvement over most other mountain bike shorts which are only two way stretch. There is no adjustment for the waist either on the outside or the inside of these shorts. So, they either will fit you or they won't. Fortunately for me, they fit. I usually take anywhere from a size 2 to a size 6 in most pants/shorts, so ending up with the Size 2 is in the ballpark.

These are so cute, so comfortable and super flattering. They are really stretchy which makes them great for any ride. I love the pattern too - really fun! They have a nice zipper pocket and front hand pockets. I feel like these do run small, as I usually wear a 0 or sometimes 2 in most things, and I got the 4 in these. You may want to consider sizing up a size.

These shorts are great. The fabric is breathable and has a bit of stretch, and the length is perfect. I really, really appreciate the sizing options, because I rarely see that in women's mtb shorts. I ordered two sizes (6/8), and I ended up keeping the 8. I definitely recommend these to anyone!

I first ordered a 6 given the reviews but sent back for the 4 (my usual size in most brands, but Patagonia/Prana wear 6 -slight loose better than slight tight). They are very stretchy and as other reviewer said they stretch out. 6 would still have worked and 4 a little tight at first but they stretch out (I am 5'8" 139 more broad shoulders and slimmer thighs if that helps anyone).

Purchased swirl dot (blue) in size 6. For reference, I'm size 4 petite women's workwear (e.g. Loft), size small North Face shorts, size 4 Marmot hiking pants, so I figured 6 would be nice and comfy. I was wrong. Material was great, but shorts were tight everywhere you'd want space while mountain biking (hips, thighs). I don't like wearing long shorts, but I took a shot on these just to give them a try - took this as a sign that I should stick to my mid-length shorts for casual riding and regular cycling shorts for more active riding pursuits. Called number with return question and had someone on the phone in less than a minute (pretty unheard of in my customer service experience). Thanks to Ryan for making return process easy and for Backcountry for making shipping and returns process/policy (and charges) transparent on their site.

I followed the sizing chart and they were suuper tight, basically spandex around the hips and thighs and then the waist had a gap. There was no waist adjustment. When I went to return them I realized that backcountry charges $7 return shipping. Overall very disappointed, mainly about the return shipping.

Updated: Could not resist the 2019 blue llama print. Picked up the same size in a 2020 print and the fit is larger, especially in the waist that I need to wear a belt. Be nice to have an adjustable waist tab.

Not only are the prints amazing, but the length and materials are perfect. The shorts move with you and don't feel bulky. The fabric is soft and stretchy. Dont worry about wearing these shorts when its muddy out because after the ride it will brush right off. They hit perfectly on your knee so that when you're wearing knee pads you dont have the awkward thigh gap. And the pockets! The cell phone pocket is perfectly placed so that your phone doesn't get in the way while pedaling, and the two front pockets are real pockets, deep enough to hold dog treats or some cash for that after ride beer. And youll definitely want to keep wearing them at the bar for that post ride beer. I have never not gotten a compliment while wearing them

I am absolutely obsessed with the Freel bike short. I can't say I'm a mountain biker, not even a novice but, I got these shorts for hiking and all sorts of spring/summer activities and wow, THEY'RE PERFECT! Comfy, Check. Durable, Check. Breathable, Check. Pretty, Check. The fabric feels so comfy, no rubbing or stickiness involved. They reach low enough on my leg that I can bushwhack without getting ripped to pieces by branches and underbrush. And the pattern is so cool. I've even been wearing these shorts under my snow pants for spring skiing and touring missions. Life. Saver. Would absolutely get another pair.

I have these shorts in the vicuna color and I love them. They are made out of good, sturdy material, but also stretch. I get compliments every time I wear the shorts. They are super cute!

I absolutely love these shorts! Aside from the obvious fun prints, these are some of the most comfortable mountian bike shorts I've ever ridden in! They sit right above the knee and have an amazing stretch to the fabric which also feels incredibly durable. Pedaling in these is a breeze and to feel like you're wearing a flattering pair of baggies too is just the best! Highly reccomended! For sizing reference, I am 5'4'' and weigh 135lbs with an athletic build, I wear a size 4 in these and they fit great!
