Based out of Gunnison Colorado, Ross Reels has been using the surrounding rivers of the Gunnison, Animas, and Taylor as testing grounds for its reels since 1973. The Evolution R Fly Reel is the latest installation in the company's history of producing reels that perform on these same rivers, but that's not to say it won't battle bonefish in the flats of Belize or the little brookies that live in your local mountain streams.

Fly fishers are known for their attention to detail, so it should come as no surprise that a reel designed and machined by actual anglers has a nuanced look and refined design. Both the frame and spool have been machined from a lightweight 6061-T6 aluminum to save weight and maintain durability. The drag system is composed of stainless steel and carbon fluoropolymer that is fully sealed to keep corrosive water out whether you're fishing fresh or saltwater.

A lot of times it's hard to justify the $400+ price tag. However, this particular reel packs so many features and innovation I've felt I've gotten my money's worth! I was going between the Evolution R and a Hatch Reel. The 7|8 EVO R weighs only 4.5 ounces compared to the 6.8 ounce hatch that felt like a block of lead on my 7wt. They are both sealed drags, and offer equal stopping power. I was able to load 200+ gelspun 30 on it and have used the R for bonefish and it performed awesome! The coolest feature I think is the palmable drag adjustment and the self leveling spool design that always levels the line out no matter how you reel it back on. I love this reel so much I also had to get one for my 5wt. Awesome job Ross Reels...so happy to see you guys are back to doing what you do best!

After fishing my Ross San Miguel for 20 years, I finally replaced it with the Ross Evolution and I love it. Beautiful reel with a smooth drag. Most importantly, you aren't stopping a tuna or tarpon on this reel so having a beautiful fly reel as my main trout reel was a must. This is much more expensive than others but worth every penny for me. I'll be fishing this one for the next 20 years.

Super large arbor, lightweight, excellent drag system, and unparalleled design...what more could you ask for? For those of you who want to see the true reel in Ross's matte black finish check out the below (incorrect reel in BC's photo)
