Rab Positron Pro Jacket - Men's for Sale, Reviews, Deals and Guides

Absolutely love the Rab positron pro quality fit and warmth. This is a piece I would have no problem selecting for cold environments such as Iceland in November. This jacket should be considered for 2020 gear of the year based on the quality and performance. Highly recommend this jacket.

It’s a great belay parka, with some interesting design choices. The sleeve construction allows for wind to get through, which isn’t ideal. The chest puffs pretty far out, too. Otherwise, unbeatable hood and the overall warmth is fantastic. I’m 6’3” and 190lbs with pretty long arms - I went with a medium and couldn’t be happier. The large was way too big even with the normal layers you’d expect to have while climbing.

I'm not the type of clown who struts around ski towns in frigid, sub zero temps wearing a lightweight down mid layer as an outer layer while pretending to be warm. The Minnesotan in me likes to be cozy. Problem is, finding a quality down jacket with adequate loft that doesn't fit like a box is a problem. Enter Rab. I've been a fan of Rab products for a while, but I find that their sizing is inconsistent across their product line. Or I'm just really hard to fit. I'm 5'11", 185lbs, and for purposes of this review I'm also a 32"/33" waist. Rab is a European brand—this is important for two reasons 1) they run slimmer (ie more fitted) than American sizing and 2) their standard zipper is left-handed. I ordered the Positron jacket (Ink) in a large because I tried on their Microlight Alpine mid layer jacket in store and found that the large fit perfectly. Turned out that the Positron large was much too big. I was swimming in it. I returned it for a medium which fits perfectly. This jacket runs long—the bottom of the back hem falls just below my butt. It's really hard to find a down jacket with adequate backside coverage and that makes a huge difference for warmth. I include my waist size because the jacket is snug but not tight around my waist. If you have a waist size over 33" or a big cushion, I'd recommend sizing up to the large. I still have plenty of room in the chest and arms to layer multiple garments without constriction. Overall, the build quality of this jacket is exactly what I expect from Rab: Bomber. Things I love about this jacket: hood is insulated and wired, high insulated collar for face coverage, long hem, long sleeves with excellent wrist cinch, sheds water, highly packable, and the two front hand pockets are massive—big enough to accommodate your hands wearing bulky mittens. I also like that the designers placed the internal zippered security chest pocket opposite from the exterior chest pocket to avoid stacking. Only things I'd improve would be to add two large mesh utility pockets on the interior, a simple paracord loop or utility clip inside one of the pockets, and turn one of the pockets into a stuff sack so you don’t have to keep track of the separate stuff sack they give you. The left-handed zipper isn't bothersome to me at all, don’t even notice it. This jacket is built for frigid temps and, thus far, I’m not disappointed. With any luck, the Positron will be the last down jacket I buy for a very long time.

The RAB Neutrino Pro jacket... this thing is a game changer. I play disc golf year round in Minneapolis, MN and for those of you who don't know, it's gets really freaking cold here, and windy. We are happy to see snow because that means it's warm enough to snow. This jacket is so good I have reduced my preparation for a cold windy round to putting on a T-shirt, and then my jacket, and that's it. And halfway through a round I'm usually too hot which is a great problem to have. It has also stood up to rainy rounds and performed beautifully there as well. If you are looking for a durable coat that will keep you warm in any condition look no further. The hood might even be the best part, it's like a cocoon for your head that feels like you're wearing an expensive sleeping back outside and that's pretty awesome. There's nothing better than being out in brutal cold in this, but being perfectly comfortable at the same time. I'd buy another RAB jacket no questions asked, these are next-level.

First off, this jacket is toasty! This will be my second ever purchase of a down jacket. I bought this for a good winter camping/hiking jacket and although i haven't been able to take it out yet i can tell this will be a great buy. Compared to my Columbia Platinum Plus 860 TurboDown this thing blows it out of the water wearing it around the house. The fit is good for me. At 5'8'' 123lbs its a bit big in the arms but good room for additional layers. The length is good and sits about 5 inches below where i wear my belt. Im not big on black clothing however this has a good graphite color to it. In the sun it has a greyish shean to it. It also comes with a nice stuff sack for your pack. There is only one con that i can think of. The zippers are annoying. The main zipper gets hung up either by grabbing the internal fabric or getting stuck on the tracks. With a jacket costing 400$+ this is absolutely unacceptable. Also, the zipper is on the wrong side.

I'm amending my prior review. It's now January of 2017. I tried a few other jackets after returning this coat because of the zipper problem and nothing else I could find compared with this amazing jacket. I contacted Rab and discovered the trick to zipping this jacket easily almost every time. On the right hand side of the zipper there's a small tab built into the jacket and you can pull down on that tab which assists you in seating the zipper properly. Now I rarealy have problems zipping this jacket. I purchased another jacket and absolutely love it. Don't hesitate to try this amazingly warm and functional down jacket from Rab. Jeff I wrote the first review for this jacket. I still love the coat. Its the best winter cold weather coat I've found. However the zipper problems make this jacket an untenable winter jacket. I returned the first coat thinking it must have been a fluke. The second coat had the exact same problems. I even asked some friends to try it out to see if they could zip it up. Everyone had the same problems. It takes multiple attempts to get the zipper to function properly. I wish someone at Backcountry would contact the people at Rab and let them know that this fantastic jacket has a major flaw in the zipper and they need to fix it. When they do fix it I'll buy another Rab Positron coat. Thanks!

Many great features and nice construction of good materials, but the jacket falls short of 5 stars because of wimpy sleeves. High winds and minus temperatures...my arms get a bit cold. I don't understand why Rab didn't address this for a jacket that is supposed to be the next level up from the Neutrino. It's like they keep adding stuffing to the chest (extreme example of this: Rab's Andes coat) but leave the sleeves skimpy. Now, I know they want good arm mobility for true climbers, but I can't help feel that the stitch-through construction of the sleeves and less fill was driven by value rather than technical motives. Warmer sleeves would still allow good movement with the right geometry. All that said, I do like the jacket for all but the coldest conditions. Hence 4 stars. The large was too tight on my chest, though I am normally size large in all items. XL worked well.

I've been on the hunt for the perfect cold weather down coat for most of three decades. Numerous coats have come along from heavy Arctic style down coats with coyote fur, to light versions used in layering. I had about given up on finding the perfect coat until the Rab Positron arrived in the mail. What feature is missing? I can't find one. It's so extraordinarily warm that I have to shed other layers on all but the absolute coldest outings becaus this thing is an oven. I run cold and typically have a hard time staying warm. I'm 6 ft and 160 lbs and a large was perfect with room to layer. It's also a great fit with just a henly and flannel under the coat. The deep cavernous pockets are a dream come true to warm up your hands and accommodate large gloves or mits easily. The hood is surprisingly warm and easy to adjust. If there's one thing I could wish to see improved its the zipper. The thing is backwards and difficult to operate for a right handed user and has taken some getting used to. At first I had lots of trouble with the zipper but I'm learning to overcome that difficulty. The coat is incredibly pack able and has relegated several other go-to coats to the back of the closet. If all the othe Rab coats are made with this same attention to detail and construction then they have really set a new benchmark in the down coat world. I couldn't be more happy. I only wish I had crossed paths with this amazing price of winter gear 10 years earlier and it would have saved me lots of money and time searching for a perfect cold weather coat. Anything above 30 degrees is just too warm to wear this thing. You'll cook and that's coming from a person that struggles to stay warm. Below 30 and down to single digits it's been a dream come true. I haven't been into the below zero weather yet to test it but this weekend I hope to find some really cold temps to test it out. This coat sheds water beautifully. It seems to be windproof, and with layers I'm sure it's good way down below zero. Hats off to Rab for a fantastic winter garment. You won't be disappointed.
