Patagonia’s Capilene line is undeniably the best base layer in the game, Thermal, Mid and Air series. I have had mine for two seasons and they perform remarkably so I thought I’d give their short sleeves a try. Between the Daily, Trail and Lightweight models, I chose the Trail because of the cotton-like appearance and for their overall fit. The lightweight was too thin making them see through and the daily suffered from bacon/oversized necks. I’ve only used them this summer but so far so good. They wick sweat so I’ve stayed cool and dry during my hikes and the odor control seems to work fine.

I have two Capilene shirts I bought about 4 years ago -- these were the ones with the very small lines in the fabric -- and two of the current model. I've backpacked all over the country with these shirts and I prefer the older model, which dries faster and fits me better (I'm big in the shoulders and chest). I think the older model also was an inch or so longer, which I prefer. With that said, the new Capilene shirts are excellent hiking and backpacking shirts. They do a superb job of wicking away moisture, dry pretty fast, and are comfortable for a full day on the trail.

The Capilene Cool Trail shirt has come a long way in a short time. I like that the logo has moved from the chest down to the bottom. Fit is really good, and the colors are fantastic. They’re not the lightest shirts out there, there are other Capilene shirts for that, but these do the best at both looking like a regular t-shirt and performing well on the trail. Capilene has always held onto funk a bit longer than merino, but this latest version is the best at avoiding odors so far.

Positives: True to size. Soft and comfortable fabric. Looks nice. Negatives: Doesn’t breathe as well as many other light synthetic shirts I already own. Stinks up quickly and retains the funk after washing. Didn’t dry much faster than my BD Rhythm or TrewGear shirts made from Nuyarn. Overall; I am sticking with the Merino wool/synthetic blend shirts for backpacking.

These are light, have a great feel and don't wrinkle. I have a slew of them but we are Tennessee fans and the Mango is THE BEST!
