The Cervelo Caledonia 105 Road Bike comes with the accessible Shimano 105 2x road groupset on a frame that will no doubt usher in a new era of the modern racing steed, one that preserves the sensations of the weekend epics that start from home and soar towards routes that haven't yet been created. Designed for a mix of it all and leaving little off the table, Cervelo creates an all-new work of art that effortlessly fills the void between the aggressive road-specific design and laid back gravel capacity. The Caledonia is a bike for which so many riders have been waiting. Designed for riders who favor the speed and compact front end of road bikes, but are also pulled to the earthy taste of fine gravel dust on a gritty smile, the Caledonia opens doors that we always thought were possible. And paired with the durable and reliable 105 semi-compact groupset, with a 34 tooth cog on the back for smashing steep rollers or coaxing exhausted legs home, "road-riding" is about to be redefined.

Cervelo willingly yielded to the stretch the R5 was under to become something it's not, and looked back to the R3 Mud, the cobble-focused steed upon which Johan Van Summeren rode to a convincing win —showcasing the brilliant talents domestiques possess— in the 2011 Roubaix. Building a bike for the modern racer presents a challenge as many of us know the feelings of a featherweight, endurance racing bike, but want to mix in with the off-road scene as well when the slacker, beefier rigs take that hard cut onto the gravel shortcut. The Caledonia is "engineered for the modern road" with a lightweight frame of 1031 grams and a shorter wheelbase and front-center than the Aspero gravel racer, it satisfies the road cycling, aero-mesh wearing crew quite nicely. And with a trail and head tube angle similar to the Aspero —not to mention clearance for 34mm tires— the Caledonia is well-suited for mixing in with the roads less traveled and making use of a head unit's explore feature.

Cervelo also focuses on carbon layup with a mindset of increased rider comfort resulting in energy savings to ride faster for longer. Although constructed to be slightly heavier than its sibling, the Caledonia-5, Cervelo blends compliance and stiffness into the Caledonia's carbon layup to provide a smoother ride that mitigates the jarring effects of rough pavement without sacrificing the benefits of a stiff front end and bottom bracket area. The result is a frame that responds quickly to accelerations while remaining compliant enough to absorb significant turbulence from the roadways. And returning is Cervelo's proven blending of strategically oriented tube shapes to design a frame that will work best to meet the demands of the modern racer.

Cervelo opts for a more traditional stem-bar interface on the Caledonia and a standard 27.2mm seatpost. The front derailleur mount is removable should you ever go 1x and want a cleaner aesthetic. Internal cable routing is available, although not integrated through the stem junction as in the Caledonia-5. Additionally, hidden fender mounts are onboard, that when used with fenders minimally reduce tire clearance down to 31mm. All in all, the Caledonia ushers in a new breed of racing bike that satisfies the growing demands of modern, all-terrain cycling.
