Wind protection up front, breathability on the sides, soft and warm fleece throughout—there's a lot to like about The North Face's Apex Canyonwall Vest, and your body will agree when it hits that sweet spot of a core temperature on chilly day hikes. A perfect layering piece for fall days on the trail, this vest features TNF's highly wind-resistant fabric on the main body to block cool breezes and keep your core temperature up, while breathable side panels promote cooling airflow whether you're wearing it under a shell or as your outer layer. A soft fleece backing provides the cozy warmth you need as the temperatures dip, while inner and outer pockets ensure that you've got the storage you need for trail maps, snacks, and anything else you might need for a day in the woods.

First off, do not believe any of the reviews that claim this fits true to size. It fits huge. I don't know what TNF is thinking with the sizing. I am usually between a medium and a large; it varies with brand. I ordered a medium because I like vests to be trim fitting for layering, especially when using them for mountain biking. I remember pulling the vest out of the shipping package, unfolding it, and holding it up in front of me. It was so broad I honestly felt an extra large must have been shipped by mistake. I sent it back in exchange for a small, which does fit. It is long enough that the bottom extends underneath the hip belt of a pack. Like some other North Face clothing, it has a very high tab collar, which is sort of weird. They could easily take an inch of height off those. Aside from fit issues, it is nothing spectacular but does its job. It is windproof vest that provides some insulation. I was happy enough with it that a year later I ordered another one in a different color. Unfortunately, TNF has changed--some might say cheapened--the design. Everything is almost the same: the same fabric, the same cut, the same placement of seams. It is literally like The North Face took the old design and decided what they could do to change as little as possible but manufacture it cheaper. The new one lacks the draw cord in the hem to cinch the bottom close the body. The pockets have also changed. Instead of being slightly angled and inward of the side seams, the pockets are now vertical and the vertical side seams are aligned with the zippers. It makes the vest look less "techy" and more casual. I suspect the new pocket design was done to cheapen the manufacturing by combining what used to be two sets of stitching into one. I cannot say I am pleased about the pockets. I am definitely not happy with the way TNF took the same piece of clothing, the same name, Apex Canyonwall Vest, and downgraded it into something better suited for casual use in town. I will probably send it back; I have not decided yet.

Pretty much goes with anything. Here in Virginia sometimes it never gets cold enough to wear a jacket . You can get by with a long sleeve and a vest like this especially if you’re working outside. Definitely has a great look and will keep you warm. Since I purchased it, I actually stoped wearing jackets and just wear it With a hoodie, sweater or Long sleeve and it seems to do the job. Also you don’t have that restricted Feeling that you get with some jackets.

Decided to give this as a Christmas gift to my Grandpa and he thinks it's awesome! He really liked the soft fleece lining paired with that WindWall exterior that seems like it's going to stand up well to some tough seasons. He's about 6'0" and pretty hefty, I purchased him an XXL and it certainly fits true to size.

This is my second North Face vest and unfortunately it is not a trim / slim of a fit as the photo would suggest.

This vest has a very boxy fit. I guess if you were wearing it over a heavy flannel or hoody it would work out OK, but doesn't work well for me to wear as a mid-layer under a shell jacket.

Solid vest that looks sharp and has a good cut. Doesn't hang too long below the waist. It has good size arm holes so you don't get cutting or rubbing under your arm pits if you have bigger shoulders or are layering multiple garments under it.

1st Time user who was directed to your site by my daughter who is a regular user. Was impressed with the ease of ordering as a newbie. Ordered and purchased while sitting on airport tarmac waiting for a gate, EZ. The vest is a Christmas present and I was concerned about delivery b4 the 25th. Delivered on time and the 10% off wasn’t bad either. Kudo’s to Backcountry I’ll be seeing you all again. Thanks
