Shimano has jumped all in on the premium cycling clothing segment of the market and the first garment we have gotten a chance to check out is the S-PHYRE Short-Sleeve Jersey. Working with the professionals at Lotto-Jumbo, Shimano creates a racing jersey designed to improve aerodynamics by reducing drag with its seamless design.

Shimano is quite aware that if you want to go fast in training or racing you have to be comfortable. That way, you can stay fresher longer and save energy for critical points of the ride or race. The S-PHYRE jersey utilizes a unique one-piece seamless design with a tight fit that reduces drag while still being incredibly comfortable. A lightweight fabric used in a 3D pattern around the shoulders reduces wrinkles so that the wind has less material to interact with leading to less turbulence. Anatomically placed pockets allow for easy access to food or clothing when you are on the go. The S-PHYRE jersey is available in three colors, stealth black, blue, and a high-viz yellow and it's offered in four sizes ranging from S to XL.

I'll cut to the chase here; this jersey really surpassed my initial expectations. I believe this is shimano's first foray into the road apparel, as they had made some MTB apparel previously. I had tapered my expectations of fit & performance accordingly. I was looking for an all-black jersey with minimal branding and a solid fit, which is usually fairly difficult for someone who is 6'3" and weighs around 177 - 180 lbs. Turns out - I ended up really loving this jersey for those reasons stated, and more. Fit is really great - tad larger than a traditional Euro fit, (I find myself wearing a M in Euro-cut). Went for a Large and it's a great fit in the body/stomach - tight in the arms, and arm length was spot on - not capped sleeves, coming to slightly above tru mid bicep. no rubbing or hot spots, no bulky zippers, neck/collar fit great. Material used is a huge plus - it's not see-through thin, but still feels lighter than traditional lyrca for, say, training jerseys. The jersey also feels very waterproof, while retaining stretch - almost feeling like a more robust fabric overall. I have been using this jersey for almost any temps, wore it in the fall, used it last year in the heat of summer - and now I've been riding in it during spring. Legit all-around jersey, couldn't be happier with the purchase.

This is a very different jersey. It stretches on and no wrinkles. I have used it up to 85° F. One issue I have with it is that the lower front of the jersey has taken on some black from my bibs, but hardly noticeable. I wear a medium or small in Castelli, depending on jersey model.

I got this a few weeks ago and have had a chance to wear it and the shorts a couple of times. I'm 5'8" 150, 31 waist with slightly muscular arms. The jersey is a good race cut, and since the material is a little less stretchy than normal it doesn't give like typical fabric. The arms are definitely a little tight around the bicep. Standing in front of the mirror, it felt a little small but like every other piece of good cycling kit I had to wear it on the bike. Happy to say the fit was better, and I'm keeping it. I was able to wear both a thin baselayer under it as well as a pair of armwarmers.

This jersey feels thick and awkward. If you enjoy lightweight jerseys that you can almost forget you're wearing, this is the opposite. I am having a hard time thinking of how to describe the material for you. It is not soft to the touch. Tarp is not a good comparison, but it's what comes to mind. I tried sitting around in it for 10 mins to let it grow on me, but it didn't and I and had to send it back. Incidentally, the S-PHYRE bib shorts are NOT made of a material like this jersey, and I love the shorts. Really wanted the matching jersey to become my go-to kit, but I really couldn't stand wearing this jersey.

I wanted to like this jersey, but the fabric felt “heavy” and not as stretchy as I would have wanted. Also- fit was off. I usually take a small, this one was too small- but in a way where I know a medium would be too big.
