Warm, stretchy, and always breathable enough for your active cool-weather pursuits—there's a reason that the Patagonia R1 Fleece 1/2-Zip Pullover has been a trusted mainstay of Patagonia's lineup for the past 20 years. This ultra-versatile midlayer will join you everywhere, from fall desert climbing sessions to spring backpacking trips and early morning ski tours. It uses a Patagonia-exclusive Polartec Power Grid fleece, which uses a special grid design to enhance airflow and moisture management when you're working hard in falling temps. It's also infused with spandex, offering an easy stretch that'll keep any hold within reach when you're chasing sunlight on end-of-day climbs. The deep chest zipper allows for cooling ventilation when you really start to get going, while offset shoulder seams ensure comfort under pack straps on early-morning starts. Plus, it's got a smooth exterior face that layers easily under a shell when your travels take you to windy peaks and rainy climates.

I'm 5'5", 135lb, with ~34" chest and 29" waist. I'm often between an XS and S depending on the brand -- I just got an XS that fit, but was definitely tight. I'll be sizing up to the size S. The sleeves are a bit too long on the Small, but I think that's the right compromise for something that I'll be wearing for active sports. Haven't used it yet at all, but it feels super lightweight and relatively warm!

Been wearing R1’s for years. This new 1/2 zip has a beading material sewn around the sleeves and bottom. I want my R1 to be along for the ride, not reminding me it’s there every move.

This was my second fleece of this brand and type. Nice and warm, light weight, fashionable. However, I was out on a hike and wearing this fleece and a small tree branch caught the fleece and ripped it wide open really easy. Also most like was wearing a paper material. So my review is a good one, but know that this is not a rugged fabric and you need to be careful in how you use it. I returned it for a replacement with no issues because Backcountry Rocks!!!

This piece of gear is definitely my new favorite pullover. I liked it so much, I bought one in balkan blue after I got a black one. The fit is slim, but not restrictive (due to the stretch of the fabric). The smooth outer fabric makes it great as a mid layer. Pairing it with a moisture wicking tee makes it excellent for outdoor activities in cold and warmer weather. I don't think I'll need a new technical pullover until I wear these out!

This thing is warm when it's cold out. And comfortable when not so cold. It dries fast. Fits true to size like all Patagonia stuff. Perfect base to mid layer.

I’ve got an R1 fleece 1/2 zip hoody and everything that has been said about R1, layering, warmth, flexibility, etc. is true. Easily the best “active wear fleece” I’ve ever worn, and I’ve worn a lot (because I’m old and an equipment freak). Sleeves do tend to run long... That said, the single best piece, IMO, that Patagonia ever did is their heavy, quarter zip Synchilla pullover with 2 pockets from the 80s. Got mine on right now. Maybe the best piece of outdoor clothing Anyone ever made!

The Patagonia R1 pullover is still one of the best all-season layers out there. The interior "waffle" pattern creates a fleece grid that has a way of venting when you need breathability during activity, but at the same time it bulks up the insulating properties when used alone as an outer layer or as a mid layer under a jacket or shell. The trim fit and slightly slippery outer fabric make it perfect for layering. The 1/2 zip neck opens wide for easy on/off (much better than 1/4 zip designs). Start your cold-weather activity with this piece layered under a jacket, then shed the jacket as you warm up and the R1 will provide a functional balance of warmth and breathability for the much of the day. Head out with the R1 alone for cool weather activity and you're good. Also great for crisp summer mornings/evenings in high altitude climates. I love mine, you'll love yours -- highly recommended!

With none of my base/mid layers making the cut, I was told check out the R1. While I was skeptical of how warm it could possibly be at first, after wearing it under my shell skiing on several occasions, I am blown away just how mighty it is. Whether you choose to wear it up skiing or just out and about, the R1 is a must have.

I like a lot of what Patagonia does, but this is my favorite product from them to date. It's the right combination of warm yet breathable and it's super light. A great weight to warmth ratio. I bought this for the Three Pass Trek in Nepal and it was an essential layer in my light weight pack. Highly recommend.

I bought this for my brother in law because almost every time I see him he is wearing the same R1 so I knew he could use an additional. He noted that the fit of his new one is slightly larger and looser than previously so I think the newer version of this may run a little large.

I love this layer for climbing and ski touring! I like this version of the R1 better than the hooded version because I normally wear a balaclava when in the mountains. I normally am in between a large and medium, but the medium fit great!

Bought this as a gift for a layering fleece. Nice quality and fit true-to-size, the receiver is super happy with it.

I have an earlier version of this and decided to upgrade and get a new one. The fit is a little bit more relaxed, and the sleeves a little longer. It is the same great workmanship and feels nice and warm. The temps have not dropped yet so I have not been able to put it to the test . It is a great product that will perform.

This is my everyday work horse and I love it. This is replacing an old one that is now full of holes and considerably thinner then when I first bought it roughly 8 or 9 yrs ago ( its no longer warm enough to do the job I bought it for). I have a black one for cities, a green and now a blue one for hiking and rock-climbing. Over the cooler times of the year I'm always in one of them as its the perfect weight for layering with other pieces. The slim fit goes under the harness easily yet there's plenty of room in the shoulders for unrestricted movement when climbing. My old battered one has now become a good winter layer for mountain-biking as the slim fit doesn't snag on passing branches and I don't have to worry about destroying it on falls or overheating in it. Versatile and tough, it a no brainer.

This is a good lightweight fleece, works well under a softshell on windy morning hikes, or under an insulated jacket for added warmth while ski touring. Fit is slim, to fit well under layers. I normally wear a medium in all Patagonia jackets and the Medium fit perfectly. I have long arms, so I appreciate the longer sleeves in all Patagonia's jackets.

I picked up an R1 Hoody a little over a year ago and absolutely love it as a base layer and as an outer layer on less chilly days. The fit is fantastic. The elongated sleeves with thumb loops are great. If you wear glasses, the hood can be a bit snug on the frames when zippered up tight, but manageable. With the R1 Pullover, I was hoping to find the same great product without the hood. Unfortunately, it is not the same product in two key ways. While the sleeves are still extra long, there are no thumb loops, so the material bunches at the wrists and lower arms when sliding it under a mid-layer. Also, whereas the hoody has a nice athletic fit, the pullover runs larger and is significantly boxy. Again, not ideal for a base layer. There are plenty of great fitting, high quality, mid-weight fleece pullovers on the market that make excellent base and mid-layers. And they cost a fair amount less than the R1 Pullover. If Patagonia does ever make an R1 Pullover with the same cut and features as the Hoody, I'll definitely get one. As for the current incarnation, I'm sending mine back for a refund.

Got as a gift and here was the feedback I got: " The older versions with the thumb loops, embroidered logo and true to fit size was much better. This new version got rid of the thumb loops on the non hooded version and the sizing is way bigger. A large is the old version was perfect and now I need to gain some weight to fill this thing in."

Patagonia's R1 pullovers are FANTASTIC! I own three, one with hood and two without. I wear a capilene tshirt, an R1 pullover, then maybe a midlayer (on cold, windy days) and a shell, and I'm toasty all day. These are slim fit, while I'm normally an XL, I ordered XXL for the longer tail to tuck into pants/bibs. The fit is slim enough to where sizing up is not overly large. I'm thrilled with the R1! Another great product from a great company.
