Placing down serious power with every pedal stroke, the Northwave Men's Ghost XCM Cycling Shoe gives XC die-hards the efficiency desired for blowing past the competition on race day and besting their PRs on the local trails. The Ghost XCM owes its pedaling efficiency to the Carbon XC 12 sole, complete with a full carbon insert underneath the cleats for extraordinary power transfer every time you turn the cranks. Not only that, but Northwave's Xframe construction precisely wrap around your foot with minimal slop, thanks to its multi-layer construction designed to fit like a glove, but without pressure points sapping your comfort while racing and training.

Looking beyond the Ghost XCM's powerful pedaling, the SLW2 closure system gives you total control over the upper's tightness with the simple twist of dial. One of its best features is the ability to loosen the uppers in small increments, which is nice if you crank the dial too tightly and need to back things off just a bit. And when it's time to kick your shoes off after a long ride, the entire thing loosens with the pull of a single trigger, which is nearly effortless and takes only a split-second to initiate.

I got these to replace some old Pearl Izumi MTB Race shoes. These things are less burly than what I was used to, and felt more like a cross between a road shoe and a mtb shoe. I use it for gravel racing and mtb riding. Power transfer is great with the stiff carbon sole. At the start of every ride, I notice the top of the cuff where the tongue normally is touching my ankle, but after five minutes I don't feet it. The shoes are generally comfy enough that I don't notice my feet during long days on New England dirt roads and up hills. The cat tongue material at the heel prevents heel slip just like it does in Shimano's road shoes, and the one boa has a fine adjustment mechanism that makes fit pretty precise. I have no trouble loosening the boa to take off the shoes--takes 2 seconds. Just pull the trigger up with one hand and pull up the tongue with your other and the whole thing is loose and coming off the foot. This thing does run small. I have a size 12 shoe generally. I wear 45 in Shimano shoes, but a 46 in Northwaves.

I purchased these as a replacement to a Rebel model a couple months ago and the SLW2 closing mechanism constantly sticks, making it difficult to open and remove the shoe. I haven't determined whether the cause is related to the wire lacing or the dial itself however, it's upsetting for a shoe of this cost.
