Over the past five years we've seen a lot of advancement in mountain bike technology. From refined carbon frames with dialed geometry, to more reliable and effective suspension components, we as riders all benefit from the technological progression of this sport. When it comes to wheels though, there's a small Utah-based company called Mercury that believes more can be done. Their X1 Enduro 29in Boost Wheelset ups the ante in the carbon fiber wheel game by incorporating an advanced composite material they've mysteriously dubbed Fiber-X. Possessing twice the tensile strength of high-modulus carbon fiber, Fiber-X's damping characteristics deliver a trail-tuned ride while increasing the durability and impact resistance of the rim. The result is a stronger wheel that rides better than the competition, allowing you to push your limits on the trail without worrying about your equipment.

The Fiber-X material is blended into the center of the rim, distinguished by the prominent silver stripe in between the carbon. The design works by using an optimized trapezoidal rim profile that funnels trail input into the tough elastic material, dissipating impact energy and avoiding rim failure during violent impacts. The design also dampens the trail in a way that provides riders with a more comfortable and controlled ride—all without sacrificing the lateral rigidity needed for a precise and responsive steering feel.

At the center of the X1 Enduro Wheelset is the new Axis hub system. These hubs use stiffness-boosting straight-pull spokes that are hand-laced to the rim by Mercury's expert wheel builders. The freehub uses a triple-stepped 6-pawl mechanism that delivers an impressive 3.5-degree engagement, putting the Axis hubs right up there with the best offerings on the market.

I’m 210lbs and not easy on my bikes I’ve had them on my bike for about a year now. Light weight, very durable, stay true, look great, easily mount up tubeless and hands down the best upgrade to my Yeti. Yes I recommend them and have to many friends I ride with.

I've had these wheels on 2 of my mountain bikes and have been really impressed with the performance and how well they hold up over time. Engagement is off the hook. They're lightweight and stiff and hold a line really well through rocky, rooty technical terrain. Highly recommend!

Great rims with great hubs! This is my second pair of Mercury carbon wheels. They’re stiff, strong, and very light. Perfect for my enduro machine. Love the super quick engagement. Nice job mercury.

After putting these wheels through the paces the last few months I have nothing but praise for these. After riding these wheels for over 1100 miles on rough singletrack, I have found that these wheels are stiff and wide with quick engagement. The hand build on them is fantastic. I found myself trusting these much more than my previous Enve carbon wheel set. Love these wheels and would highly recommend them.

These X1’s made a great upgrade to my SC Tall Boy. Instant improvement in climbing and the bike feels perfect now. I’m 210lbs and not the smoothest rider out there. So far so good after about 10 months of steady hard riding. They dropped a good bit of weight from my bike and it’s noticeable. Very well built wheelset and haven’t had to true them at all.

Very happy with my X1 carbon wheelset as an upgrade to my DT factory wheels. These are very light and extremely durable. Super quick rear hub engagement. Running Maxxis Crossmark 2.25 tires and they ride great Over a 3100 miles on them so far with no issues. Get yourself a set and you won't be disappointed.

I’m very happy with these, I’ve Mountain biked every other day for over a month, in all types of terrain, and in different weather conditions, the rims are excellent, they feel wonderful, and hold up well to hard riding. This is definitely the best upgrade I’ve made.

I bought these as an upgrade to my 2019 Stumpjumper ST. I upgraded the stock, alloy Specialized wheels, and tires (changed to Maxxis Forecaster/Ikon). Together, the upgraded wheels and tires shaved 5.2 lbs off the total weight of the bike. My bike went from a burly 35.2 lbs to a respectable 30.0 lbs, including pedals. Over the past 3 weeks I have ridden the new wheelset over 100 miles on dry, rocky trails in No. Utah and Idaho. There is a noticeable difference in my climbing speed. Downhill they are solid. The hubs have opened my eyes to the benefits of high-engagement. Ratcheting over technical sections is easy, and the near-instant power transfer during pedaling is really nice. I would highly recommend these wheels to anyone. EDIT: The day after posting my original review I broke my back rim on a local trail. The Mercury Wheels staff reached out to me and completely took care of the problem. In my case the rim couldn't be repaired and was quickly replaced. I was very impressed with their service. Thanks!

The X1’s are light and ride surprisingly well. They're rigid but still have a flex when you want it. Tubeless setup was super easy. Also, love the quick engagement. Great purchase.

The X1 wheels are light and stiff but with nice damping effect. The engagement is right on. I ride very tech and find that the wheel track spot on. I have been riding these wheels for one year and they are still true. No issues at all. Highly recommend.

I’ve had these on my Niner for two seasons. These FiberX wheels have been great. They are stiff, track well through nasty rocks, yet never beat me up. The FiberX provides a nice damping effect. Great hub engagement with little drag. Great deal on this wheelset.

I own several other sets of Mercury Carbon Road Wheels and Alloy MTN wheels and have always been very pleased with quality and performance. When looking for lightweight Carbon Wheel Set for XC build that could handle a 200lb + aggressive rider and after looking at all the options I choose the X1 Fiber X 29er wheel set. To date X1’s have exceeded all my expectations and for the price I don’t think you will find a better Carbon MTN wheel set.

These rims are then most durable I have used and survive where others have not.... I weigh over 200lbs and ride rough and rocky trails as fast as i can... i mangle aluminum rims and until the Mercury X1's i have destroyed every carbon rear rim i have owned... i hate truing wheels so I've wanted carbon to work for me so badly for a while, but i keep going back to aluminum since at least i can make it down the hill and then repair dents at home... even lifetime warranty wheels are a waste of time if they still break (they do)... i just want the wheels to hold up... I got these X1's because I liked the idea of the extra fibers to increase resiliency of the rim and add impact resistance... i have been on them for a year, and had some major impacts to the rim and they are still going straight and true... other brands I have used haven't made 3 months before i need to have them warranteed... added bonus: they have a damped ride compared to the typical super stiff rims which i really appreciate... everyone makes things overly stiff and its cool in the test lab, but not when you have to ride the stuff and all the stiffness sends the vibrations straight through your body...

These wheels have been great. Have had them for about a 8 months now and the bearings and spoke tension are as good as they were new. They had the single track rock gardens around like a champ. For the price, you wouldn't believe the high quality but I honestly believe these MTB wheels may be the best on the market. Well done Mercury.
