You can plan for a great day of backcountry skiing, take all the necessary precautions, and still get caught in an unexpected slide. Helping you stay on the surface when a slab releases a torrent of snow down an alpine face, the Mammut Pro RAS (Removable Airbag System) 3.0 Backpack is a useful tool in the backcountry skier's arsenal of gear. Not only does the RAS 3.0 increase your likelihood of staying on top of a slide, but it's lighter and more compact than ever for increased efficiency on demanding tours.

The Pro RAS 3.0 comes in 35L or 45L iterations. Both versions have plenty of room for all your gear, avy kit, food, and water. Access is super easy, with a fully zippered back panel and top U-zipper, and your shovel and probe are easily accessible from the front tool pocket. Mammut included a diagonal ski carrier, along with a vertical snowboard carrier. Other helpful storage options include an integrated helmet carrier, plus multiple attachments for ice axes or trekking poles.

The aluminum suspension system supports and transfers the load to your hips, subsequently saving your back and shoulders on long uphill hauls. Thermo-molded back padding delivers plush comfort during day-long tours. The removable, padded hip belt lets you go streamlined with lighter loads and features its own pocket for small frequent-use items, like a compass, map, and inclinometer. A sturdy leg loop keeps the bag in an upright position during the turmoil of an avalanche. Mammut built in a low-profile sleeve for a hydration reservoir, tossed in a padded goggle pocket to keep your shades secure, and topped off the Pro RAS 3.0 with compression straps to cinch down your load for stable carrying.

Please remember, this airbag system is NOT a guarantee that you will survive an avalanche; get educated, get the right tools, travel with partners, and be smart out there.

R.A.S. or removable airbag system is a pretty nifty idea. I ended up getting this pack and the Dakine Poacher R.A.S. Vest. So, I have a backpack for bigger touring days and trips and have the vest for resort slack country days and shorter tours. So I can just swap the airbag and canister between the two set ups and have two airbag set ups. Very Cool.
