The Mammut Men's Nordwand 2.1 High Boot might be overkill for your summer ascent of New Hampshire's Mount Washington, but it'll be the boot you want if you're headed to the Himalayas or venturing up Denali. Mammut's newest alpine boot, the Nordwand is a 2-in-1 super-gaiter boot that boasts a carefully-considered design to maximize warmth, capitalize on comfort, and deliver solid and sure climbing in the world's highest mountain ranges.

The gaiter of the Nordwand is made with a tough, wear-resistant material to handle the wear and tear intrinsic to climbing alpine ice and rock, and it's reinforced with a full-wrap rubber rand for additional protection from the rugged alpine environments the Nordwand was built for. Mammut even added its Chimney ventilation system to help ensure good breathability and limit sweat accumulation. The inner boot is insulated with Thinsulate Ultra insulation, making the boot capable of keeping your foot warm in temperatures down to -31 degrees Fahrenheit.

Mammut designed the Nordwand 2.1 around its Easy Entry System, which allows the boot to be taken on and off with gloves on, so you don't have to expose your fingers to the cold after an already cold day on the ropes. Ensuring a secure and comfortable fit, the inner boot houses a wide hook-and-loop power strap, Boa closure system, and drawcord lace closure. The inner boot is composed of a synthetic leather, which is nearly identical to traditional nubuck leather, except lighter. Mammut's patented carbon insole is double insulated for increased warmth and sits above a stiff, light, and compressed Poro wedge midsole and Vibram Teton sole for a good dampening properties and climbing feel that's hard to beat.

I had high hopes for this boot. I tried couple of different La Sportiva boots but in the end decided for Mammut Nordwand 2.1 boot. Couple reasons - waterproof gaiter and zipper Light boot and being very comfortable to wear, very sturdy construction for a great feel and confidence when climbing rocky terrain, work great with crampons. I wore the boot once when climbing Cotopaxi in Ecuador. My team and I were lucky with weather window, clear sky, very light wind, temps just slightly below freezing (-5C ~ -10C). The boots were comfortable (in terms of pressure points) all the way up to summit, it took us 6 hours and some to summit, but here comes my disappointment. I love Mammut products and I trust their word but here they claim the boot is good for as low temps as -31F (-35C) and I don't think that's nearly the case. I don't know how they tested this but two hours into the climb I started to feel my toes being cold and around 4am when the temps were about the lowest during that climb, my toes were uncomfortably cold, borderline painful which is not what you want to be dealing with when climbing steep glacier terrain. I wore my medium thick merino wool socks so I don't think I underestimated that part, funny enough my fingers were feeling toasty in my single liner goretex gloves ($100 REI) while carrying ice axe? most of my team mates had rented older beaten up plastic double boots from local outfitter and neither of them complained about cold toes. bummer. I returned the boots.

I tried out these boots along with four other options. Liked them in the following order: 5) Arcteryx Acrux - Extremely narrow, fit was terrible, snaps would likely not work in cold/snow, otherwise not a bad design. Wouldn't work as designed though. 4) Scarpa 6000 - Didn't like the wonky zipper design. Felt cheaper than the price point. Didn't seem bad, but other options seemed better. 3) Boreal Siula - These would be a great budget option. A bit heavy and would take some getting used to the lacing system, but not bad at all. 2) La Sportiva G2 SM - The boot itself is very good. The liner is absolutely terrible and actually painful to wear with a nasty pinch point at the top of the foot at the ankle. I did try them with the Scarpa 6000 liners and they'd be great boots with that setup. 1) Mammut Nordwand - These were the top choice out of all the options I tried. It was a toss up between these and the Sportivas (with a different liner). I ultimately went with the Nordwands because they felt a tad more comfortable and I really like the higher integrated gaiter. The Sportivas felt like they'd need a gaiter over them, but the Mammuts won't. Haven't had a chance to try out the Mammuts in a real environment yet, but will take them up Mt Elbrus this year. Looking forward to putting them to use.

Upgrading from a plastic double boot these were much more comfortable and flexible. Two climbs of Mt. Katahdin on back to back days around 0°F they kept my temperature regulated and unblistered. Hoping to put them on some vertical ice and see how they do. I wear 11.5 to 12 and the 12 gives me plenty of room. Wide toe box! I have wide feet and these fit fantastic. Only reason I didnt rate 5 stars is the fact that after one 4 day trip the rubber covering the zippers on both boots is starting to separate where the boot flexes. Also the outer layer on the seam tape in the built in gaiter is starting to rub off a little by the BOA closure (the BOA is incredible, doesnt loosen up at all) Hopefully backcountry will let me know if mammut has had any zipper trouble after reading this review.

I bought this boots on July 2017. Nice, comfortable and warm boots. On February 2019 I went to Aconcagua, and on the summit day, the zipper broke. Very bad experience with a freezing climate.
