ENVE, the carbon wheel wizards out of Ogden, Utah, have, in a short time, found themselves in an existential position, moving beyond the pragmatic approach to wheel building and towards vision boards with specs for the idealistic mountain wheel. They feel they have created it with the M640 27.5in Boost Wheelset. By chasing the infinite potential of what a mountain bike wheel can be, ENVE's carbon layup aims to improve strength, durability, speed, acceleration, handling, and other characteristics that benefit your trail sessions and racing. ENVE utilizes a full carbon laminate protocol, which sees 100% unidirectional carbon fiber in a dedicated laminate to protect against the forces the M640 is likely to encounter on the trail. Primarily, the wheel is optimized to promote durability, stiffness, and compliance on trails in which you would take your 100-160mm travel bike so as not to create a mismatch between design and intent, which would weaken the on-trail performance characteristics. As a trail-oriented wheel, ENVE uses a 28-hole spoke orientation to gather the best attributes of 32-hole enduro durability and the 24-hole XC design's featherweight swiftness.

To reduce pinch-flats and excessive tire damage, ENVE calls on their Wide Hookless Bead, which is a broader rim bead surface area that disperses impact pressure across more of the tire during deflection and bigger trail hits. As part of ENVE's M-line, the M640 claims the ideal wheel-tire interface for 2.7-3.2in tires. However, if you run narrower tires, ENVE's M630 and M635 maintain the same impressive construction and tire-fit optimization for 2.3-2.5in and 2.5-2.8in, respectively.
