I gave these to a friend who is literally always cold, no matter the temperature outside. She said they're a nice extra layer between her baselayer and ski pants to add more warmth to those cold snowy days sitting on a lift. She's a sold size 10 across most brands, and to allow some layering room underneath, I picked up the XL for her. The fit gave just enough room without being overly tight or so baggy they fell off. The left side pocket is nice for keeping anything that needs to be securely zipped away.

Hi, this is Emily and I work on the Backcountry brand product development team. I am writing this review today to help guide your sizing decision on this new product. My measurements are: 5'4" Tall Size 4, or on the larger size of S in bottoms The larger side of S for tops bust 34 B The product we all need! The pant fits a little on the small side, the M fits me very well over a baselayer. I am a biker and skier so have the regular feminine athletic build (large thighs, and booty) and had ample space for movement in the M.

These are so awesome. I had been looking for a zip of underlayer for women for quite some time! I've worn these skiing on multiple occasions (cool because the hit at the top of the boot and can be zipped without removing boots) and also on hunting trips, perfect for sitting still when you're freezing! I wish backcountry would make a line of zip off merino underlayers as well for those warmer days. ;)

I ordered a L in the Pirate Black and an XL in Black. I got the Pirate Black in L instead of M because the reviews said they run small. But it definitely fits like a true L. BUT the XL I got in the Black fit like a M. The XL in Black was actually smaller than the L in Pirate Black. I kept the XL in Black cause it is actually the medium fit I was looking for. Sorry for the weird and long review on the sizing. Besides the odd fit, it is really nice fitting under my shell.

Great concept and I love that they zip on and off. The only issue is that they seem to gap at the waist - and the draw string doesn't do a ton to combat that. That said, they're comfy, warm and good quality. They held up as a midlayer on some cold days of resort skiing, and I'm thrilled to have found them. Good quality, but probably not worth paying full price. On sale - very worth it.

I purchased these for winter camping and fitting under shell pants for skiing and mountaineering. I absolutely love the fit and extra warmth these provide. The length is perfect, in my opinion. I’m not sure I agree that these run small though. I’m 5’3 and around 118 lbs with muscular legs. I’m typically a size small or XS, depending on the brand. After reading the reviews on here, I ordered a size small. Although they’ll work for me, I think I would’ve preferred an XS.

I bought these for my sister-in-law who skis with Arcteryx shell pants and is frequently cold. She is typically an XS and wears these in XS; however, she says they do run a bit small. If you're in between sizes, I would definitely recommend sizing up. She has a 24" waist, for context. The zippers on the sides aren't the best quality, and we had trouble getting them to fully unzip and re-zip. The pants themselves are super warm and fit nicely underneath her shell pants. They don't pack down for travel, but it's well worth it for the cost of these and the warm legs while skiing!

The XL was too small to be of use during actual activity, but these are a great idea. I was impressed with the amount of stretch built into them. That is not something I was expecting of a quilted and insulated layering piece. So kudos on that nice touch. Also, even though they were too small overall, the general silhouette/cut seemed to be made well to be flattering for skiers with muscle in the thigh/hip/rear. Would love to see a XXL version, or an update on the sizing so the XL actually fits a women's 16.

I bought these before heading on a ski trip to the Canadian Rockies where the temperatures were expected to get below -30C. I layered these under my shell pants for a few days on the slopes in these conditions and they kept me toasty warm. They don't pack down super small which is a shame because I was considering taking these on future mountaineering trips where I could put them on at summit/camp.

Was looking for a way to add warmth, as I predominately only ride or tour with shells even when its super cold out, and wearing a bunch of layers or taking off/adding long underwear leg layers during the day can be a real pain. For a recent trip in Canada, was so cold I had so many layers on I felt like the Stay Puff marshmallow man, which prompted this purchase. Have been looking at various solutions, including making my own (added some side zippers to some heavyweight leggings), but nothing was quite working right. So far, this is the best solution I have found! But, Backcountry.... I really wish you would make a few improvements: - Offer a shorter length option, I am 5'2" and have to fold up about 5 inches of pant length which is not ideal and it gets caught or pulled up over my knee - Please make these much more stretchy (at least in zones) and come up just a touch higher for waist rise - The pocket is pretty much useless, so could lose it - The snaps/zippers aren't the easiest, but seem to be pretty secure Overall, would love to see some improvements, but so happy I purchased this. Will be editing mine to shorten them since that is quite a problem for me when I can dig out my sewing machine.

I LOVE these pants. However, they were expensive to begin with and now I have to take them to my seamstress to fix the inner crotch seam that is starting to lose its stitching after just one season. Great concept, but perhaps needs some extra care with the construction if the purpose is to do outdoor activities in them

I purchased these to wear on really cold shifts at my local hill. I'm impressed by the well thought out design, nice amount of insulation, length works well with boots, zip off allows me to easily add or drop this layer. Previous reviews said they run small, but I feel like they're pretty true. I ended up ordering my usual size and could wear them under a shell, or even zip them over my touring pants for a cold transition.

Bought these for my ski trip last week to Mammoth. I have not seen snow like this in 40 years. I wear the Arcteryx shell jack and pants and knew I would need a little help to stay warm. With the wind chill it was 0 degrees. Best purchase I have made in a long time. The price was way better than the Arcteryx brand could not see spending $200.00. I am 5’10” 150 lbs. and purchased the size large. Only gripe I have, it could be a little longer through the crotch for taller skiers. Love them!

I bought these for my wife at Christmas and she was excited for them. After wearing them a couple times skiing with two other base layers under them (she freezes while skiing) she said these are a game changer to keeping her warm. The design is pretty good, the few changes she says she would make are adding hand pockets on both sides and maybe pocket openings to lay a little smoother so they look more flattering. Overall worth the purchase.

My first impression is that these are amazing and I can't believe I have gone this long without them. I love the capri length with skiing since you have boots on anyhow. They fit perfect for me and fit under my ski pants well. I imagine them to be perfect for resort riding and hanging around a hut backcountry skiing. I think they would be too toasty for uphill travel though. Of note, I have chicken legs. I notice the review below says the leg holes were too small for her muscular thighs. Might be something too consider.

I got these yesterday and my first impression is great! They are a good design; perfect length for wearing with mountaineering boots or even xtratufs. The zip off nature of them is ideal for my world, where I frequently need to add or remove layers without removing my footwear or don't want to struggle with trying to pull pants off over big muddy boots. They are very lightweight and fitted, yet warm! In regards to fit; I read another review that left me nervous about the fit of these, but for my body type they are perfect. I am a very muscular 115 lbs and 5'6; the XS fit great. I have a straight vs curvy build, typically my struggle with pants is when the waist is too tight when buttoned but the rest of the pant fits nicely, or the waist fits but the rest of the pant is too baggy. The XS of these pants are a perfect fit, and extremely comfortable. Looking forward to throwing them on without having to take my shoes off when I'm working outside in AK this winter and the temperatures drop!

I had high hopes for these knickers, but they arrived with a broken zipper pull and a zipper up one side that doesn't work (the slider can't move up all the teeth- I assume the teeth are incorrectly sewn). I also found them to be pretty slim fitting- I'm very decidedly in the size small measurement ranges but the knickers are tight. My muscly skier thighs would bust right through these. Great idea, poor execution, and very poor craftsmanship.
